Try Standing By a Corner
As an alternative to standing in the middle of nowhere, you might want to actually use a building or wall in your shot. In this circumstance your first instinct is to focus on the wall, but that might not work too well depending on your depth-of-field.
One trick that I discovered is to stand next to the end of a wall or at a corner. This way you can position yourself even with the wall and achieve a solid focus. So if you focus on the wall, then stand next to rather than in front of it, your focus should be much better.
Capture You
My last tip is to use the images below only loosely as inspiration. A self-portrait should be a very personal expression, not simply a mirror of something you've seen elsewhere. Think about who you want to be and how you want to say that. Use props, scenery, pose and lighting conditions to convey your personality. And most of all, have fun!
Environmental Portrait
I chose this picture because when I first saw it it was very confusing how that girl looks like she is facing forward but really isn't its just an illusion.
I chose this photo because I found it very humorous and it is great how the man is taking the picture so seriously even though he is half naked.
Casual Portrait
I chose this photo because I like how the man is trying to look cool like he is literally trying to
hard which I think is funny.
Formal Portrait
I chose this Black and White photo of a bride because I like the fact that it is missing colors because the picture seems more intense and the lady is beautiful.
Again another black and white photo that looks very formal because they tried to hard. for instance they added a book just so it look a lot more serious.
I like this photo because it again seems so serious because of the black and white and the lady look very serious as well but she has a mustache on which makes the whole picture hilarious.
I chose this picture because I have no idea what this is or what its purpose is but I still find it interesting.
My Plan
I plan to take a picture of me with a soccer ball out in the field maybe doing a trick or when I'm just about to kick it. I would like to get it from behind sort of at an angle so that you can see my position when I'm about to kick the ball and can see the goal in the far background.
