Self Portrait

Tips

 Try Standing By a Corner

As an alternative to standing in the middle of nowhere, you might want to actually use a building or wall in your shot. In this circumstance your first instinct is to focus on the wall, but that might not work too well depending on your depth-of-field.
One trick that I discovered is to stand next to the end of a wall or at a corner. This way you can position yourself even with the wall and achieve a solid focus. So if you focus on the wall, then stand next to rather than in front of it, your focus should be much better.
Capture You
My last tip is to use the images below only loosely as inspiration. A self-portrait should be a very personal expression, not simply a mirror of something you've seen elsewhere. Think about who you want to be and how you want to say that. Use props, scenery, pose and lighting conditions to convey your personality. And most of all, have fun!
Environmental Portrait
I chose this picture because when I first saw it it was very confusing how that girl looks like she is facing forward but really isn't its just an illusion.

I chose this photo because I found it very humorous and it is great how the man is taking the picture so seriously even though he is half naked.

Casual Portrait

I chose this photo because I like the whole idea of the reflection and plus the baby is so cute.

I chose this photo because I like how the man is trying to look cool like he is literally trying to
hard which I think is funny.

Formal Portrait

I chose this Black and White photo of a bride because I like the fact that it is missing colors because the picture seems more intense and the lady is beautiful.

Again another black and white photo that looks very formal because they tried to hard. for instance they added a book just so it look a lot more serious.

Self Portrait
I like this photo because it again seems so serious because of the black and white and the lady look very serious as well but she has a mustache on which makes the whole picture hilarious.

I chose this picture because I have no idea what this is or what its purpose is but I still find it interesting.

My Plan

I plan to take a picture of me with a soccer ball out in the field maybe doing a trick or when I'm just about to kick it. I would like to get it from behind sort of at an angle so that you can see my position when I'm about to kick the ball and can see the goal in the far background.

Purpose to Photography

I really liked the powerpoint the photos of the African animals were astonishing.

I really like this photo because because it seems like the elephant is in a studio because of the background but in reality he is out in the wild. Also the Black and white makes the picture that much better. I rule of photography i would say it follows is framing.

a.     What kind of camera did he use?
He uses a Pentax 67ll with only two fixed lenses.
b.     What is his reason for taking the photos?
To show the being of the animals, before they are no longer there.
c.     What is his hope by taking these types of photos?
His hope is to show how beautiful animals are and how we should protect them.
d.     Find something he has to say about Africa and post the quote on your blog
"I'm not interested in creating work that is simply documentary or filled with action and drama, which has been the norm in the photography of animals in the wild."

Academic Photo Shoot

Repetition
1. I think i followed the rule well for this one
2. It is the pattern of the bench in the courtyard
3. It is not too clear since it is only focused on the pattern so it might be hard for the people to guess what it is right away.

Simplicity
1. Maybe I could of made the picture look a little more simple but I think I still did a fairly good job.
2. The subject is the arts building.
3. I think the subject is obvious in this picture
4. I could of gotten more sky and less of trees and the designs on the bottom on the building

Rule of Thirds
1. I think the rule was well followed but there could of have been a better picture.
2. The main subject is the teacher.
3. The subject is not too clear because of everything else that is going on on the picture.
4. I could of made the subject a lot more obvious.

Balance
1. I think I followed the rule well by showing the shapes in this picture.
2. The main subject is the big white shape in the middle
3. The subject is clear for this picture.

Contrast
1. The rule is well followed for this picture.
2. The main subject are the two trees.
3. I believe the subject is clear.
4. I could of only gotten the trees in the picture and nothing of the building.

Leading Lines
1. I think the rule was well followed for this photo.
2. The main subject is the two lines that lead you down the rode.
3. The subject is obvious in this photo.

Academic Photo Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
It was hard to figure out creative ways to portray the different pictures.
2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
I had to take my time focusing the pictures correctly so i just set the camera on auto-focus
3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
I would try to stay more focused on taking pictures and not just walk around
4. What things would you do the same?
keep trying to be creative and not always come back with the same pictures.
5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
Leading lines is always a pretty easy and nice picture to take.
6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
Forced Mergers is usually one I can't find, specially around campus.
7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
Forced Mergers is a little unclear to me but i know by asking the instructor it will clear up for me.

Mexico's National Team

So Mexico had two games this last week one against Panama and one against Costa Rica. We played the one against Panama at Mexico and we won 2-1 with an amazing last minute goal. The game against Costa Rica was at Costa Rica and we ended up losing 2-1 playing a disgusting game. In the end Mexico still has a chance to go to the World Cup if the beat New Zealand in two games.

Picture taking Plan

Classrooms are probably a good place to take photos like the ones I saw today
I would like to visit Science classes and classes that have something to do with sports
I will try the people not to notice Im getting their photo so that the picture will be more natural.

Elements of Art and Principles of Design

Line

Picture

Lines are marks made by a pointed tool: brush, pencil, pen, etc. Lines can vary in width, direction, curvature, length, or color.

Shape

Picture

Shapes are formed wherever the ends of a continuous line meet. Geometric shapes such as circles, triangles or squares have perfect, uniform measurements and don't often appear in nature. Organic shapes are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.

Color

Picture

Color wheels show the primary colors, secondary colors, and the tertiary (intermediate) colors. They also show the relationships between complementary colors across from each other, such as blue and orange; and analogous (similar or related) colors next to each other such as yellow, green, and blue. Black and white may be thought of as colors but, in fact, they are not. White light is the presence of all color; black is the absence of reflected light and therefore the absence of color.

Value

Picture

Value, or tone, refers to dark and light; the value scale refers to black and white with all gradations of gray in between.  Value contrasts help us to see and understand a two-dimensional work of art.

Form

Picture

Form describes objects that are three-dimensional, having length, width, and height.

Texture

Picture

Texture can be rough, bumpy, slick, scratchy, smooth, silky, soft, prickly--the list is endless.  Texture refers to the surface quality, both simulated and actual, of artwork.

Space

Picture

Space refers to distances or areas around, between, or within components of a piece. Space can be positive (white or light) or  negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.

Learning Art - The Principles of Design

Picture

Balance

Picture

Balance is the comfortable or pleasing arrangement of things in art.  There are three different types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. The human figure is symmetrically balanced; the same on the left and right side. The tree is asymmetrically balanced; its branches are not distributed equally on each side, but their total weight is balanced left and right. The sun is an example of radial balance; all its rays are equal in length from the center.

Contrast

Picture

Contrast is created by using elements that conflict with one another. Often, contrast is created using complementary colors or extremely light and dark values. Contrast creates interest in a piece and often draws the eye to certain areas. It is used to make a painting look interesting.

Emphasis

Picture

Emphasis in the focal area of an artwork gives it importance.  An artist may stress some elements of the design over others. The eye of the viewer will focus on the area of emphasis or center of interest first, then take in the rest of the composition.

Movement

Picture

Movement in an artwork means the artist is taking viewers on a trip through the work by means of lines, edges, shapes, and colors often leading to the focal area.  Movement is a visual flow through the composition. It can be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from object to object by way of placement and position.  Directional movement can be created with a value pattern. It is with the placement of dark and light areas that you can move your attention through the format.

Pattern

Picture

Patterns are made in art when the same shapes or elements are repeated again and again.  Pattern uses the elements of art in planned or random repetitions to enhance surfaces of paintings or sculptures.

Rhythm

Picture

Rhythm is the repetition of shapes, lines, and forms.  Rhythm is a movement in which some elements recurs regularly.  Like a dance, it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beat of music.

Unity

Picture

Unity means that all elements in an artwork are in harmony.  Unity brings together a composition with similar units.  For example, if your composition was using wavy lines and organic shapes you would stay with those types of lines and not put in even one geometric shape.

Academic Photo Shoot Preview

Action and Emotion
This photo is full of action and emotion because as the water flies in the air the girls are full of surprise.

The Story
This picture tell the true story of high school life, just piles and piles of work and you still have to read "30 minutes"

Fills the Frame
The whole frame is filled with the different reactions of the students.

I chose this photo because I really like tennis and know about team work.
Also this picture is using simplicity because of the simple background so that we can focus on the players.

Quick Write

I like this picture because of the humor in it she is taking a "selfie" while all the other people are praying which i find hilarious. One of the elements this picture is using is repetition because it seems like the persons praying are just repeating over and over.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

Photo manipulation is okay to a certain extent, if the editor only fixed the lighting so that the picture is more visible or better interpreted than i think its okay. But if the photo is manipulated to pervert the meaning or context of it in order to trick the audience than it is unethical.

This picture is the most unethical to me because the manipulation used on this photo is to fix the context of the photo and make it look like the soldier is not letting the man with the kid pass when in reality the soldier was not looking or waving at the man and there was other people in front of the man with the baby so this picture was completely fixed up to seem like a complete different occasion.

This picture is the least unethical because the context of the picture is not manipulated at all the story behind it stays the same the only things that were fixed were things that were distracting to the audience and the picture gets the message across better without distractions but without fixing it give a different message than the original.

National Geographic Warm-up

This is my favorite photo because it combines many this I really like in photos. One of them is the stars I like pictures of the stars because they are so amazing and you never really know what you are looking at. Another this is the lightning pictures of lightning are awesome already so looking at the lightning revolving the smoke is stunning. And finally its an eruption and eruptions are also super interesting, just all of these elements combined make this picture that amazing.

Simplicity

This picture is simplicity because you are allowed to focus on the main subject since the background is plain so it allows you to concentrate on the the main focus of the picture.

Lines

This one is lines because the line onto of the building starts on the far left and leads you to the huge explosion.

Frame

This is frame because it looks like the buildings look like they are framed in the center of the picture.

Rule of Thirds

This is the rule of thirds because the firefighters are placed in the upper right position so that the viewer can see the ruins of the buildings all around them.

Balance

This is balance because you can clearly see the rectangular shape of the center building.

Repetition

There is repetition because the structure of the building makes it look like there are identical lines going up and down.

Post Reflection

This is Ulises Chavez Blog:  http://ulisesphotoj.blogspot.com

Two positive things:
1. Ulises' pictures are well taken.
2. He also took the time to make it more appealing with a background and templates.

Something he could improve:
1. His responses are a little vague and superficial

What made me choose this photo? I'm a big fan of soccer and I know the racism problems that the sport has been through.
Anything about the composition of the photo? The two guys are in the foreground and are the main attention of the photo.
Why is it in the top 40? it made the top 40 because racism has been a big problem all over the world at some point in time so when two superstars of the sport show mutual respect it can inspire others.

By Jeff Widener
What made me choose this photo? I find this picture so inspiring because of the man's bravery
Anything about the composition of the photo? The photographer successfully portrays the difference in power from 4 huge tanks to the small man
Why is this in the top 40? It inspires people to stand up for what they believe in no matter how hard it may seem you can fight the power.

What made me choose this photo? This picture is very moving because despite their different religions the christians are still willing to help out the muslims.
Anything about the composition of the photo? The photographer successfully catches the many muslims praying while also shows the worried look of the christians concerned for the muslims.
Why is this in the top 40? This picture is showing the kindness in humans and how they are willing to help each other out and is one of the very few that can portray these kinds of actions.

3. What were the parts of the first modern camera invented by Niepce?
- Niepce added the final touch by adding film to create the first successful camera.

4.What do modern digital cameras have in common with Niepce’s camera?
- Light passes through the lens, into the camera, and exposes the film.

5. What do digital cameras use to capture an image?
- Instead of using plastic film, digital cameras capture the images with an electronic sensor called a CCD6. What

6. What is the difference between the Auto Mode and the Program mode?
-  Auto mode will control things like flash and focus while on program mode you would have to fix this up yourself.

7. What is the Portrait mode used for? How does it work?
- To attempt to blur out the background, the camera will use the fastest lens setting.

8. What is the Sports mode used for? (not just sports) How does it work?
- To freeze motion, it takes the highest shutter speed possible.

9. Why should you do a half press on the trigger button?
- So that you can allow the camera to focus before it takes the picture.

10. What does this symbol mean?

- This symbol is the "Disabled Flash"

When would you use this?
- When you want a more dramatic shot natural light can be better.

11.What does this symbol mean?

- This means that the flash will trigger automatically.

When would you use this?
- When you want the camera to divide wether or not flash should be used.

- It would be 1 stop brighter.

16. How many stops brighter is the new planet if there are four sons instead of two?
- If the new planet had 4 suns it would be 2 stops brighter.

17. What affect does a longer shutter speed of have?
- A longer shutter speed means more light.

18. What affect does a shorter shutter speed have?
- A shorter shutter speed has less light.

19. What does the aperture control?
- The aperture is like a pupil. You can control the amount of light that reaches the lens.

20. When adjusting the aperture, how can you increase the amount of light?
- set the aperture settings at a lower level.
